On Friday May 2, Cyclone Nargis hit southwestern Burma with winds at speeds of 120 mph. 5 divisions in Burma have been declared national disaster areas - Pegu, Irrawaddy, Rangoon, Mon and Karen. The numbers of those affected continues to skyrocket. It has been hard to estimate the death toll because it has been impossible to get access to some of the worst hit areas- but as of right the numbers range from 22,000 to 60,000 dead, with tens of thousand missing and hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions displaced. Many older Burmese are saying this is the worst storm they have ever seen and international media is claiming this to be the worst natural disaster in Asia since the 2004 tsunami.

The Burmese government’s response has been atrocious. They were aware days in advance that the cyclone was coming, but chose not to warn the people know so that they could prepare. Furthermore, many reports came in that the government was giving minimal assistance to the destroyed areas, responding with guns instead of aid. Many countries and international organizations have offered assistance, but their efforts are being controlled and blocked by the paranoid Burmese government.

Burma Relief Benefit Event
May 17, 2008
6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

There is an emergency fundraising event for this Saturday May 17th at Q Cafe from 6-9pm. This event is open to all individuals and groups as a way to respond to the recent tragedy that hit Burma last Friday. Cyclone Nargis has left a rising count of 100,00 dead, over 1 million homeless, and tens of thousands missing. There will be a suggested donation at the door, live music, food, and items for sale. All proceeds will go to World Aid, a local 501(c)3 non-profit, that provides aid to groups and individuals in Burma and along the Thailand-Burma border. Burma Action Group (BAG), a UW student group, and Burma Roundtable, an umbrella group to BAG that raises awareness and provides medical and humanitarian aid for refugees, will be there to both support and fundraise with t-shirts. For comments, questions, or if you would like to directly donate, please email Eunice at eunisoh@u.washington.edu Thank you for your support. Every little bit counts!

May 16th, 17th, and 18th - Global Day of Action for Cyclone Relief

Hi, I’m Christine, a student at UCSD and I’m planning on asking for money in the shopping area of La Jolla, on Villa La Jolla Dr, 92037. There are many big name stores on both sides of that street, such as Ralphs, Trader Joe’s, CVS, Wholefoods, and many other restaurants and movie theatres. I’d love some help this Friday May 16 and/or Saturday May 17 and/or Sunday May 18. Feel free to come and go at any time! Even an hour or two will be greatly appreciated. I plan to donate all the proceeds to www.avaaz.org It is an organization that will give the money directly to the monks in Myanmar/Burma who are helping so many people. I feel that going through this charity will help the people in need immediately and without any government bureaucracy. Any help or suggests about soliciting aid outside of grocery stores and other public places would be of great help to me. Thank you!
